Join artist Tom Thoune and explore the versatile use of gouache paint. Gouache, often called opaque watercolor, is a favorite for illustrators and designers. It is a water-based paint that can be used without chemicals and creates matte, flat colors. In this workshop, participants will explore how to decide on and mix interesting color palettes and create imagery through layering opaque colors. Each participant will create an artwork based around a single object or portrait and will leave with confidence in working with gouache in future works. All supplies are included, but please bring a printed image if you have a specific person or object you’d like to reference.

Students can expect to learn:

• Color theory and paint mixing
• How color works as value
• How to choose palettes
• Gouache vs. watercolor vs. acrylic paints
• How to use gouache in various opacities

PARKING AND ARRIVAL

Watershed Charlotte (2101 Shenandoah Ave): There is ample parking to the side and behind the building. When you arrive, go to the side door at the parking lot on the east side of the building (opposite end of the church from the sanctuary). If no one is there to let you in or the door is currently locked, ring the doorbell on the brick wall with an Arts+ sign next to it to call our studio.
