Adult Art Workshop: Window with a View

An exploration of color with paint!

Workshop Description

The window has been a common and recurring theme throughout the history of painting. Is it a metaphor for an individual’s perspective? A liminal space between interior and exterior worlds? A starting point for an investigation into light and color? During this 3 hour, online workshop, artists will use the window as subject matter to investigate new and exciting color schemes. This workshop is for artists of all levels who want to play with the expressive, spatial, and non-representational potential of color. If color intimidates you away from painting, or if you’re ready to mix outside your comfort zone, join us for this fun, experimental workshop.

Participants are responsible for their own supplies. This workshop will be done in two parts with a break for lunch to allow drying time between steps and color experimentation.

  • Acrylic paint
Minimum Required: Primaries (red/yellow/blue), black, and white
  • Optional: Secondaries (violet/orange/green) and/or other colors that you would like to work with like neutrals, earth tones, or neons. The more color the better! If you already have a variety of paints, you may use what you have as long as you have the minimum required colors. If you typically work in gouache, oils, or watercolors, you may do so for this project.
  • Primed canvas or wet media paper. Minimum 14”x18” but you may work large
  • A basic set of brushes (small and medium) Any variety of shapes but I recommend having some flat, round, and/or filbert

  • White paper for color play activity (Use what you have on hand, work in your sketchbook, or purchase wet media paper if you prefer.)

  • A palette. Make your own with aluminum foil or parchment paper. You may also buy a plastic palette or a pad of palette paper.

  • Water cups/jars

  • Paper towels or rags

  • Pencils and erasers
