This 6-week course will focus on creating artworks inspired by plants and flowers while exploring a variety of materials and techniques throughout the course. Students will learn how to create engaging compositions by observing plants and nature firsthand. Using a gestural approach, we will create artwork from life while incorporating our own personal interpretations.

During Weeks 1–3, students will explore the fundamentals of composition, color theory, and mark-making. These first weeks will emphasize experimentation with a range of materials, including graphite, colored pencils, watercolor, and acrylic paint, allowing students to discover different ways of expressing botanical forms.

During Weeks 3–6, students will build on the skills and techniques they have developed by selecting one medium to create a final botanical artwork. They will refine their observational skills, strengthen their personal artistic voice, and apply the concepts learned throughout the course.

Students can expect to learn:

• How to create a strong composition
• Color theory basics
• Expressive mark making and how to create visual texture
• Confidence using natural forms as reference
• How to use multiple mediums in single artworks

PARKING AND ARRIVAL

Arts+ Uptown Studios (601 E 5th St): Parking can be accessed via the lot on 5th street (which is a one way street) just past the front entrance of the building. The lot can also be accessed on N Alexander St. The arm for the parking lot will raise as you enter. Parking is free and you do not need a code to enter or exit. If the lot is full, parking can be found on the surrounding streets at meters.

When you enter the building, please sign in at the front desk using the iPads and enter ArtsPlus (Arts+) as the organization you are visiting. Take the elevator to the 2nd floor and make an immediate left.

When you leave, please sign out at the front on the iPads. If you are parked in the parking lot, simply go to the gate and press the green exit button.
