Charlotte Youth Choir Singers Learn Teamwork, Critical Thinking, and Creative Problem Solving
The Charlotte Youth Choir, consisting of four ensembles for grades K-12, has provided access to outstanding arts education plus all the benefits it brings for over 35 years. In weekly rehearsals and regular performances, singers learn lifelong skills including teamwork, critical thinking, and creative problem solving.
In rehearsals, students start with vocal warm-ups to get their voices ready and to work on technique fundamentals such as posture, breath support, vowel shapes, articulation, and range. They then work on a variety of music, ensuring they’re exposed to a wide range of genres, cultures, and time periods. Younger singers develop skills in creative problem solving by participating in music literacy activities. Older singers improve their critical thinking skills by discussing how to improve performances through engaging and entertaining audience connections.
Above all, the Charlotte Youth Choir focuses on teamwork, teaching that students all matter and must all work together to succeed. “I enjoy choir because the people make me feel safe and great,” CYC singer Eesha said.
CYC is led by Director of Music Programs and Artistic Director of the Charlotte Youth Choir Wes Smith. Wes is responsible for steering the artistic vision of all four ensembles, which includes deciding repertoire, building singer camaraderie, planning interesting concerts, and engaging with the Charlotte community. “I conduct two of our four ensembles, and we have brilliant instructors who conduct the other two choirs,” Wes said. “We are also blessed to have the incredible talents of Nia Williams Reyes as our collaborative pianist each week.”
Wes said his favorite part of CYC is the singers. “I love to see how excited the singers can get over a fun song, the "a-ha!" moments, the energy they have after a concert well done, the goofy games and playing they do during break times,” Wes said. “These singers are the most amazing, talented young people that I have the pleasure of working with every week.”
The Charlotte Youth Choir is always accepting new singers, and no experience or audition is needed to join for the full year, fall semester, or spring semester. This year, CYC is also offering a summer camp for singers in grades 2-6, which is the perfect opportunity for young singers to start or continue their musical journeys. The Charlotte Youth Choir offers financial aid, including a sliding scale tuition. Don’t miss out on your opportunity to grow your young singer’s voice in a fun choir!
