Arts+ Hosts CMS Art Teachers for Professional Development

Back to News

In August, Arts+ welcomed nearly 150 Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools visual art teachers to the Arts+ Community Campus for two days of hands-on professional development (PD). The PD was offered in four-hour morning and afternoon blocks, with one day dedicated to elementary educators and another for middle and high school teachers.

“We’re excited to strengthen our partnership with CMS and to share the extensiveness of Arts+ programs and resources that support teachers and students,” said Arts+ Creative Director Shane Agostinelli.

Elementary teachers participated in two sessions—Elementary Arts Lab, one of Arts+’s signature offerings, a literacy-integrated visual arts experience designed for early learners in kindergarten through 5th grade that focuses on fine motor skills and critical thinking; and Bookmaking, featuring simple, budget-friendly techniques that can easily be implemented in the classroom. Beyond technique, the session highlights creative ways these books can be used across disciplines—serving as sketchbooks in art class, journals in literacy lessons, or portfolios for student reflection.

Middle and high school teachers engaged in Printmaking with cardboard and found objects, and Quick Screen Printing using DIY tools like embroidery hoops and mesh. The sessions emphasize practical classroom management strategies, including how to organize materials, structure student participation, and maintain a clean and efficient workspace. By the end of the workshops, teachers are equipped with a creative, budget-friendly method for introducing these mediums into their art programs.

The August PD workshops hosted by Arts+ offered an engaging space for CMS art teachers to come together and create. Through thoughtful lessons teachers connected with one another and their arts community before heading back to the classroom with fresh ideas for the new school year. We are so pleased with the partnership Arts+ is providing to CMS arts teachers,” said Elisa Wadsworth, CMS Arts Education Specialist.

These workshops are one more way Arts+ helps unleash creativity Charlotte schools and beyond.
