Rob Carlisle

Rob attended Wake Forest University and North Carolina State University before earning a Bachelor of Music degree (Summa Cum Laude) from Boston's Berklee College of Music. He has been playing guitar for almost 60 years—starting with group ukulele lessons at the age of seven. He has been performing professionally for over 50 years and teaching students of all ages, from beginner to advanced, for over 25 years. He has played an immense variety of gigs, including playing in the backing bands for Rock & Roll Hall of Fame members Bo Diddley and The Coasters, as well as other classic vocal groups such as The Marvelettes and The Showmen.

Rob has experience playing most types of music, from blues, soul, funk, folk, jazz, and country to all types of rock and roll. He enjoys teaching any style and anything musical. His lessons are tailored to the individual student's tastes and abilities and can cover both electric and acoustic styles. Beginners can be playing easy tunes quickly and advanced students can delve into more challenging subjects. Topics can include chords and chord theory, improvisation, composition, music theory, rhythm, sight reading, electronic processing and techniques, music history, music production, live performance or just learning some simple songs. The emphasis is always on having fun with music at any skill level and instilling an appreciation for all music as the lifelong joy it can and should be.

Rob has taught an amazingly diverse collection of students over his years in Charlotte, as young as four and as old as 84 and from a wide variety of backgrounds. He has instructed adults at the top of their individual professions—doctors, scientists, lawyers, pilots, educators, and stay-at-home parents—as well as the children of other accomplished musicians. He also has experience teaching students with special needs, including Down Syndrome, autism, ADHD, and blindness.

In addition to his passion for music, he loves to cook, travel, collect fossils, grow vegetables with his wonderful wife, and be a loving father for their beautiful teenage daughter.
