James Curry
James Curry, a South Carolina native, graduated from Johnson C. Smith University with a Batchelor of Music Education Degree. At JCSU, he played the Bari Saxophone in the Concert band and Jazz band, and Trombone in the Marching band and the Pep band. After college he landed a job with Spirit Square Center for the Arts, the best job in the world for a young musician.
Spirit Square was known as the hub for the major arts organizations in Charlotte. It was here where James learned to play the Steel Drums and performed with “The Steel Drum Symphonette” / “The Silver Tones” off and on for more than 20 years.
Around 1999 – present, he began teaching private woodwinds lessons with the Community School of the Arts , now Arts Plus. In 2001 - present he became a band director with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools at Cochrane Collegiate Academy.
Throughout the years James has been a church musician for a variety of churches where he has performed with choirs, with praise and worship ensembles, or as a soloist.
